National conference promoted by the STAR – CODAU Group, scheduled in Urbino from 12 to 14 March 2026, dedicated to the themes of urban planning, the social function of public works, and the structural safety of historic building heritage.

In Session II, “Structural safety and vulnerability: historic buildings and public heritage”, Eng. Arch. Massimo Mariani, President of the Sisto Mastrodicasa Study Centre, speaks on the causes of structural failures in masonry buildings and on the main methods of diagnosis and intervention.
In his speech at SAIE Lab Perugia, Massimo Mariani calls into question many of the certainties of traditional seismic engineering. Starting from the comparison between Norcia and Amatrice, he highlights how prevention and widespread structural improvement interventions can save lives. At the center of the reflection is the real behavior of historic masonry, often far from theoretical models based on classical mechanics. Mariani introduces the concept of masonry disintegration, a phenomenon that leads to the loss of internal cohesion and the progressive collapse of buildings. He further emphasizes
In this video Massimo Mariani presents the first 10 paragraphs of his new book "INTERVENTI DI CONSOLIDAMENTO E RESTAURO DEGLI EDIFICI IN MURATURA. PARTICOLARI COSTRUTTIVI", published in collaboration with INGENIO.

RECENT SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES

Sliding and fixed restraints for the main roof framing in the consolidation of masonry buildings and interventions on stairs
Improving constraints and connections without altering existing structures is the principle shared by three interventions on masonry buildings: the reinforcement of a staircase, the reduction of structural interferences in the roof of a cloister, and the anchoring of trusses and timber beams.

Vulnerable masonry and seismic risk: why the Technical Standards must be revised
Vulnerable masonry undergoes progressive disintegration during a seismic event, retains the memory of damage caused by previous earthquakes, and exhibits a continuous reduction in ductility, up to its possible substantial or complete loss in the most degraded cases. These phenomena, together with the need to consider the vertical component of the earthquake and impulsive stresses (Jerk), highlight the limitations of representing seismic action through an equivalent oscillator and the elastic spectrum in the analysis of such masonry, highlighting critical issues with respect to the approach of the current NTC 2018.

Reinforcement of openings in masonry buildings with flat steel sections avoiding demolition of jambs and lintels
The article presents three interventions dedicated to the framing of openings, the reinforcement of arches and lintels, and the consolidation of an opening in a slender load-bearing masonry wall damaged by the earthquake.

Steel reinforcement for doors and windows in masonry buildings: strengthening, new openings and minimally invasive interventions
Three applied cases illustrate the use of steel profiles for the local consolidation of openings in masonry buildings: from the reinforcement of lintels to the framing of existing openings, up to the creation of new openings, with interventions designed to limit demolitions and the invasiveness of the works.

Masonry vaults: consolidation techniques with reinforced stitching, reinforced plaster and collaborating slabs
Exposed masonry vaults and brick vaults require consolidation interventions capable of combining structural safety, conservation, and improvement of seismic behavior. In this article, some design cases of interventions involving reinforced repointing, reinforced plaster, and collaborating slabs are described, accompanied by construction details that can be freely downloaded.

Vaults damaged by "false" loads and hydrogeological instability: techniques for structural consolidation
Through the analysis of three case studies, consolidation strategies are presented, accompanied by construction details, design drawings, and operational guidelines to support the design of the interventions.
Construction Details 19 June 2026
Consolidation of damaged masonry arches and vaults: three intervention methods
Three methods of structural consolidation intervention for the recovery of damaged masonry arches and vaults are illustrated: stiffening of arches using steel profiles anchored to the load-bearing masonry, reinforcement of brick vaults with metal connectors and collaborating slabs, structural confinement of a cross vault using intrados and extrados reinforced connections.
Construction Details 5 June 2026
Vulnerable historic masonry, Mariani: why the NTCs must be changed
Ineffectiveness of the linear oscillator theory of the seismic dynamics of vulnerable masonry structures without a prior intervention to restore their integrity.
