OFFICINE PERMANENTI 2018 #gentilezza

19 and 20 July 2018 at the Teatro Civico di Castello, Cagliari. Inserted as part of the CagliariPaesaggio event

The etymology of kindness contains within itself a revolutionary act. A precise choice of ethical and civic commitment, a code antithetical to that of a society crystallized in the primacy of the individual.

Kindness thus takes shape as the language of encounter, overturning the egocentrism of the modern self into a relational model of one toward the other. A pedagogical, linguistic, but also political and cultural revolution.

Are we kind or do we choose to be? How much authenticity nourishes kindness? The advance of individualist thought is a characteristic trait of contemporary society. Hobbes, in Leviathan, considered human nature as a "war of all against all," where men appear more like beasts driven by personal interests than by generosity and altruism.

Over the course of recent centuries, with the prevalence of an orthodoxy of individualism, kindness has been dismissed as a sentimental and moralistic display of being. But it has also become an underlying grammar of bourgeois hypocrisy, the kind that Moliere satirized in the famous monologue of Don Giovanni as a form of masking of who is who, or to put it in more current terms, the dictatorship of political correctness.

It is here that the opposing vector of kindness emerges: we see it increasingly in politics, in institutions, in schools, in the world of work, in relations between genders, in the current mainstream.

Today the ability to take charge of the vulnerability of others, and therefore of one's own, has become a sign of weakness, almost a risk. Yet it is the thing we miss most in collective life: it is that forbidden pleasure of entering into relation with the world, renouncing the coercive power of prevarication and embracing its sensitivity and its most fragile parts.

But what then are the codes of kindness? This is the investigation of the fourth edition of the Festival Officine Permanenti, a multidisciplinary reflection that, as every year, will start from some cardinal questions: what form does kindness have? What are the places of kindness in the world we live in? What relationship exists between kindness and artistic, musical, communicative, and working expressions? By what do we recognize kindness?

The Festival will explore the boundaries between fiction and sincerity, between public and private: a choral analysis that, through the overlapping of languages, visions, and performances, will develop the different declinations of the theme.

INGENIO & MASSIMO MARIANI – Design is born from knowledge of earthquake damage: a journey through the places of the greatest earthquakes

Design is born from knowledge of earthquake damage: a journey through the places of the greatest earthquakes

"Our Engineering of Consolidation and Restoration of buildings must move away from evanescent modeling on wall systems whose behaviors can come closer to the laws of "chaos" and "unpredictability" than to statics and dynamics: It must continue in empiricism and science in unison with each other.
We must return to being aware of our scientific knowledge, above all to disseminate the Art and Craftsmanship of our discipline, providing young colleagues and anyone wishing to deepen their knowledge with the indispensable tools for a careful reading of the origins and the crack pattern of the structural system, as well as its "state of disintegration" due to the "memory of damage" accumulated by previous earthquakes.
We must return to the practice of "knowing how to read" structures, interpreting their needs and pathologies, and then resorting to analytical checks and the most appropriate intervention techniques, always respecting the asset on which one works."

Massimo Mariani, Councilor of -

Design originates from knowledge of earthquake damage
Massimo Mariani's words led us to organize this long journey through the places of the main Italian seismic events of the last 110 years. A journey in which to meet colleagues who, through handed-down history or direct experience, have known earthquake damage.
And it will be precisely Massimo Mariani, National Councilor of the CNI, who will hold the key lection at each stop, precisely to graft in a deeper examination and an exchange of experiences and ideas that will allow us, at the end of the journey, to be able to write an account useful for all those who deal with these topics.
11 discussion events, updates, information in the cities of Italian earthquakes where one can meet technicians.
11 stops, for which we have requested professional credits for engineers, with free access.
11 meetings with companies specializing in the seismic field, to learn about new solutions and concrete cases
The program of events had the patronage of the CNI
Each stop entitles you to 4 training credits for engineers and access is free thanks to the support given by some Companies in the Sector. Due to space limitations, pre-registration is required.
